Byzantine art generally refers to artistic production and expression developed in the period of the ByzantineEmpire between the 4th century and the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
In Byzantine icons the color scale serves the spiritual and religious appearance of the icon. It depicts persons andthings, not on earthly situation, but in a transformed state, as they would be in the eternity of God’s kingdom.
These icons are drawn on wood and the colours are dissolved in egg yolk.
Of course, an icon be painted on some other surface,such as old wood, textile, plaster e.t.c.
